The twice yearly times when the lengths of day and night areequal. At equinox, the sun is directly over the Earth's equator. The vernal equinox occurs about March 22 and the autumnalequinox about September 21 or 22.
This morning rose with me sitting atop Stone Mountain, camera in hand, waiting for the sun to wake and take hold of the day. There were four of us on this hike. A small group, but a good mix and a lively group, even at 6:20am, when we met at the base of the mountain.
One of the ladies on the hike told me that today was the Autumnal Equinox - one of the two days each year that the day and the night are balanced in their roles. Hmmm, who would have known.
Sunrise.... a beginning of a new day.
Autumn.... the beginning of a new season.
Equinox.... the balance of day and night. Light and dark.
Last year was unbalanced. Crazy. Lost in its focus and design. I struggled through an entire year to see that I had to move. I had to find my purpose again. To find the place where I could maintain a balance and a sense of peace - even when the world is pulling, gnawing, enticing me to continue spiraling down.
I sat and pondered this after the rest of the group headed back down to the world and our busy lives. I found myself resting in the fact that there are forces out there that are bigger than me and my problems. That under that sky that started out so dark and black, came a light that now fills the atmosphere and resonates through the day.
The light and the dark go hand in hand, directing our rest and our play. Our time to work and our time to lay down.
I am still seeking the balance I truly know is out there, but today was a great glimpse at how it is demonstrated to me daily from dawn to dusk...
